Obituary

Tito Mesod Benady (1930-2026)

It was in October 2018 that I first met Tito Benady in Gibraltar. At the time, I was searching for eyewitnesses to the evacuation of Gibraltar civilians to the Portuguese island of Madeira (1940-1944/45). The then 88-year-old spent over three hours answering my questions. It was fascinating to see the details he remembered and how he was able to place small images within a larger context. We also talked about Jamaica and the internment of around 1,700 Gibraltar and Spanish civilians, including Tito’s relatives and family friends. As a historian of Sephardic history, I was also interested in his family history, which spanned Tetouan, Tangier, Gibraltar, and La Línea de la Concepción, and so I met him again just a week later. I was able to learn not only a lot about the Sephardic history of this region of the world, but also about the fate of the many Austrian Holocaust refugees who had fled to Gibraltar from fascism and whom his father personally cared for during the war.

We stayed in touch via email even after my departure from Gibraltar in December 2018; at that time, he was still commuting between England and Gibraltar. Ultimately, he turned his back on England and settled permanently in his beloved Gibraltar.

When I decided to return to Gibraltar in 2025 to establish a center for Atlantic history, we began searching for someone who could give our new center the necessary visibility, but also someone who could emphasize what unites us rather than what divides us. We approached Tito Benady, who readily accepted our request to become our first lifetime honorary president. Our first meeting after seven years felt as if our last meeting had been only the week before. We were discussing preparations for our first symposium in September 2025 and Gibraltar’s role in the Spanish Civil War. Then he said, “Christian, I remember July 17, 1936, very well. I was only six years old at the time, but it’s like it was yesterday.” And then he went on to talk about… Gibraltar history, the history of the Campo de Gibraltar, the history of Morocco, the history of the Strait, global history.

Besides his numerous books and essays, Tito was a gifted storyteller, whether he was speaking to children, teenagers, schoolchildren, students, or adults. He was the historical conscience of Gibraltar. His death is a great loss for Gibraltar and the region as a whole. As the International Centre for Gibraltar, we intend to honor his historical legacy in the future.

Rest in peace, נוח על משכבך בשלום

Detailed ICAH Logo

Founded in 2025, the International Centre for Atlantic History in Gibraltar is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing an academic platform for the dissemination of Atlantic history. As Europe’s southernmost Atlantic port, situated at the crossroads of two continents and the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar plays a crucial role, connecting British and Spanish, as well as Jewish, Muslim, and Christian cultures.

As the southernmost Atlantic port, the choice of Gibraltar as the seat of the newly founded centre seems ideal to us. In addition, Gibraltar is located at the intersection with the Mediterranean and Atlantic-Mediterranean Africa, which means that the impact of the Atlantic on these regions is profound and can be perfectly explored.
